Radicals

A fearless medium-turned-presidential candidate navigates scandal and politics to claim her place in history.

Raised in hardship and trained to hustle, Victoria C. Woodhull rose from obscurity to become the first woman to run for President of the United States. Fueled by spiritual conviction and sheer tenacity, she spoke out against injustices only to find herself imprisoned and entangled in scandal. Now, over a century later, a struggling playwright in rural Ohio attempts to bring Victoria’s full story to light.

From the mid-90s to the mid-00s, Knox became adept at working just about every minimum-wage job she could get her hands on. At fourteen, she found work. At fifteen, she ran. Over the next decade, Knox moved from house to house and job to job, searching for autonomy and peace—all that had eluded the women in her family. But the work, stations, and places she hid—so many clocked hours in such quiet corners of the world—revealed something else completely. It was a mix of anxious momentum and the ability to visualize something better that kept her moving forward, despite the work, albeit slowly and painfully, toward a life she hadn't previously believed possible.
